这里的歌曲集合主要有挤奶歌，用来预算未来的解梦歌曲以及预示吉祥的吉祥歌。这里的歌曲集合只是四月无村歌曲中的极小一部分，其它还有赞扬歌，情歌，宗教歌曲，历史歌曲，儿歌，幸运歌，藏族锅庄歌曲以及民谣等。儿歌是这其中最几近流失的歌曲之一。

挤奶歌是由母传女或姐妹间互相传授来传承下来的。此处的歌者是在七岁时从外婆那里学唱的这首歌曲。解梦歌曲和吉祥歌无任何禁忌，并且在亲属间代代相传。

吉祥歌通常会在宴会及婚礼庆典上吟唱，而解梦歌曲则在放牧或宴会时吟唱。

Folk songs are a common genre in Tibetan areas and are sung by men and women in both agricultural and pastoral areas. Lyrics and melodies differ between Khams and A mdo. In the Sichuan parts of Khams, this genre is sung to farewell guests (folk song 1) and to praise one‘s hometown (folk song 2).

The singer of the first folk song learnt it from a villager; it was sung to a man who helped the village to develop agriculture when he was leaving the village. The lyric goes as following; Snow on the mountain melts, but will return in the winter. Flowers die, but will come back in the spring. I am leaving, but I will be back in three years. So do not be sad!” The second song was taught to the singer by a monk who wrote the lyrics.

Besides folk songs, Tibetan tradition is rich in fables that teach morality to children. This fable was recorded in Siyuewu Village, Puxi Township, Rangtang County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. This fable in Larvung dialect and emphasizes the importance of having a good heart and repaying one‘s gratitude to people who have helped you.

民谣是适宜任何人歌唱的曲目，并且在农牧区都广为流传。它的曲调以及歌词在康巴和安多地区也是不尽相同的。在四川康巴地区，这种歌曲通常会在送别客人（如歌曲1）和赞扬家乡时吟唱（如歌曲2）。

第一首民谣的演唱者是从自己村子里一位村民那里学会的这首歌，歌曲是唱给一位曾经帮助过村民提高农业而即将离去的人。歌词大意为：“山上的积雪化了可是来年冬天会再回来；花儿都凋谢了，可是春天花会再开；我就要离开了，可是三年后我将再回来，所以请不要为我伤悲。”演唱者是从这首歌的作词人，一位僧侣口中学会的这首歌曲。

Praise songs are sung by men and women and are common throughout Khams, A mdo and Dbus gtsang. Sichuan Kham pa are especially fond of praise songs, which are sung to show respect to high religious figures, compliment surrounding areas, and praise livestock.

The performance practice of praise songs is devoid of taboos.

The singer of the second song presented here was born handicapped; as a child she had low self-confidence but the praise song taught to her by her mother gave her confidence. The lyrics particularly inspire her: “The cuckoo’s body is weak, however, it has a resonant voice that makes you want to take off your hat and listen. The horse is not strong, however, it has a steady pace that makes you want to relax the halter and gallop.”

Shibao Village is in Zongke Township, Rangtang County Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. The songs in this collection represent only a small part of the song repertoire in Shibao Village. This repertoire includes: fables, praise songs, milking songs, dreaming songs (songs about dreams, which Tibetans regard as prophetic signs), history songs (songs about describing famous historical moments), auspicious songs (songs about describing propitious times), wedding songs, love songs, lullabies, propitious songs, religious songs, folk songs, and circle dance songs. Of all these genres, the most endangered are the propitious songs, lullabies, and praising songs, and it is these that we present here. Lullabies are mostly sung by women while taking care of the baby and it is a technique that Tibetan ancestors invented to sooth the baby into deep sleep. Praise songs are sung by both men and women to praise charming landscapes, livestock, and high status people. Propitious songs are also sung by both men and women to bless listeners with good fortunes. Such songs contain lyrics such as these: “The bottle is full of medicine, showing good fortune. The pot is full of milk, showing good fortune.”

In the past, Tibetan Buddhism was a major social force in Tibetan society, and so it is not surprising to note that religious songs emerged as a song genre.Such songs were sung mostly by men, though women were not prevented from singing them. This genre was popularly sung at the beginning and the end of an occasion so as to bless participants with future happiness and success and, however in some areas it was sung during rituals to make offerings to mountain deities. These religious songs are mostly sung by men due the Buddhistic concept of favouring man rather than woman; it is thought that women’s menstruation makes them unclean and relegates them to a lower social position.

一直以来，受到在藏区起着主导力量的佛教文化的影响，宗教歌曲的相应出现也不足为奇。这样的歌曲大多由男子吟唱，但是妇女也可以。普遍在仪式场合的开始和结束时唱来祈祷参与者未来的幸福和事业的成功。不过，在有些地方唱来祭祀山神。

Praise songs were an integral part of Tibetan folklore and folk art that showed respect for: elders; the environment; such elements of daily life as tea, liquor, and livestock; and religious sites and monuments. This genre can be sung by both man and woman at celebratory gathering, religious activities, and while herding.

The method for learning this genre varied from person to person – some learnt by imitation, some were taught by elders, and adept learners could remember songs after hearing them once.

This genre is endangered because young Tibetans do not take interest in traditional songs any more.

Walton recorded these songs in his hometown in Qinghai’s Hualong County in the winter of 2008. He said, “Recording these songs was a very difficult but interesting experience for me. The greatest difficulty I faced was getting the singers to sing in front of the recorder, because they had never seen a recorder before. I was only able to record them with much persuading.”

In this collection he selected two of his favorite songs. The first song is a festival song, sung by Pad ma don ‘grub who was born in February 1975, and learnt it from his grandfather, and expressed that “it was very difficult to learn it because I am illiterate and the lyrics are very long.” Another reason that Walton chose this song was the fact that it is sung at a locally famous archery competition; it describes the process of making an arrow, the arrow’s origin, and wishes that the arrow will succeed in the future.

The second song is also a festival song, sung by the same man, but very different and very special because: 1) apart from the singer, only his grandfather can sing it in the whole township, 2) it describes the process of making barley wine that all families in Tibetan agricultural places traditionally made and enjoyed drinking at celebratory gatherings. At such parties, it is only after this song is finished that people can start to drink wine.

Ring sned Village is in Nyag rong County, Dkar mdzes Prefecture, Sichuan Province. The villagers speak a unique language, called Minyak, spoken by only 10,000 people in Dkar mdzes Prefecture. Nyag rong is an agricultural area where people grow wheat, potatoes, barley, green beans, and rape. People live among the steep, rocky mountains in in adobe and stone houses that are three to five stories tall. Forests abound on the mountain slopes.

The songs in this collection represent only a small part of the repertoire in Ring sned Village; interestingly, all songs are sung in the local Tibetan dialect rather than in the Minyak language. The song repertoire includes: praising songs, love songs, sending songs, gathering songs, weddings songs, working songs, lullabies, and dancing songs. Among these genres, the most endangered in this area are seeing off songs, praising songs, and love songs, and it is these that we present here.

The sending song is sung at celebratory gatherings when guests are leaving, and the singer learnt it by listening to other singers at gatherings when he was young. This song expreses good wishes for the departed guests. The love song is sung by Orgyal chos grags, who learnt it from his father when he was approximately twelve years old. It says “Our fate is determined by actions in our last life”. The praising song was sung by A dkar who learnt it from his father while they were herding together.

Working song may be sung when people are building adobe walls and harvesting. This genre is generally sung antiphonally by men and women, and is found in most Tibetan areas; however, it is most common in agricultural areas.

Working songs are learnt by listening and imitating others while working communally. The songs presented here praise the tools for building walls and compare the crops to precious gold and silver. Currently, work songs are highly endangered, due to the increasing mechanization of work – it is extremely rare to hear such songs even in the remotest Tibetan villages today.

Love songs are sung mostly by young, unmarried adults when herding or at celebratory gatherings. Such songs are a way for them to express emotions to each other; as open displays of affection are usually taboo in Tibetan villages. It is forbidden to sing such songs inside the house or in the presences of the singer’s relatives. Not surprisingly, many young people meet their future husband or wife this way. Love songs can be found throughout all Tibetan areas.

Love songs are generally taught between people of the same sex: father to son, mother to daughter, brother to brother, sister to sister, and between same-sex friends. When singing, the singer usually puts his/ her right hand on his/ her right cheek.

Love songs often rely heavily on metaphor, and make ample use of many other techniques of traditional Tibetan poetry. The imagery and meaning of these love songs are interconnected to the life of ordinary Tibetans.
